MK Party's Growth, Should the South African LGBTQIA+ Be Worried?

Guys! It looks like I'm the only one worried about the growth of the MK Party. It is growing exponentially. It has attracted leaders of great calibre. Majority of these new leaders migrating from the EFF. Some of them very instrumental in the formation of the red sea political party. And more South Africans seem to be gravitating towards the MK Party.

Why aren't you all worried fam?

Guys, you have to remember the founder and president of this party, former president Jacob Zuma, it's no secrete that he isn't fond of our community. That is a well documented fact. Google that and you'll find a few articles written on this. The man when campaigning for the 2024 national and provincial elections, he said that, the legalization of same-sex marriages by the South African government, it was madness, and that if elected to the office, that would be history.

Remember, one of the policies of the MK Party, is to change the country's constitution. Apparently they not pleased with it in its current form. The story pushed in the media is that, they want the constitution to empower the marginalized, that is the black and coloured people as well as women and children. The changes, they say, will mostly cover economic and inequality issues. But, I don't buy it.

There was a survey done a few years back. It was found that majority of South African citizens, they actually not accepting of homosexuality but, tolerant of it. There is a difference between the two terms. Accepting, means I accept you as you are with no intention to change you, and tolerant means, I don't agree with your ways of living but I'm willing to look the other way for the sake of peace. The latter tend to be problematic especially if one does not supplement their knowledge base with new information about the community. Those who are tolerant  usually do not challenge their current views and stance on homosexuality by acquiring new information and test their theories. This means that, provided the opportunity, some South Africans might be in support of illegalizing homosexuality or the scrapping of the law that allows same-sex couples to marry each other.

I don't know if you have  noticed this, but ever since the COVID-19 shock the world, African leaders have stood up to the Western country leaders. They have become defiant to the ways of the Western world. And one of those ways, is the re-looking of the concept of human rights with the backdrop of the African ways of living, values and traditions. This was in full display when the Ghana government was in the process of implementing an anti-homosexuality bill. When the proponents of the bill were told that, the legislation is violating other people's human rights, their response was, what is considered as a human right by the United Nations or the Western countries, it might differ in the African continent.

The four points that I've just tabled to you, this is a compost-rich ground for the anti-LGBTQIA+ agenda to thrive and gain momentum. We have seen how the country has managed to corner and side-line us on matters that are dear to our community. We are often told that our issues are not a priority. That is a reflection on how the majority feels about us and we must not grant them a chance to suffocate us further.
